Located on the southwestern coast, Hikkaduwa was one of the first Sri Lankan coastal towns to embrace international tourism in the 1970s. Famous for its coral sanctuary, vibrant nightlife, and the annual Hikkaduwa Beach Fest, it remains a beloved destination — but its most heartwarming attraction is the sea turtles that swim right up to the shore.

The shallow, warm waters near the shore allow massive Green Turtles to swim right up to the beach, creating unforgettable encounters. Visitors can safely observe these gentle, prehistoric creatures feeding on seaweed in the shallows — a natural spectacle that draws visitors from around the world. The reef break here also makes Hikkaduwa a popular surfing spot, and the diverse marine life visible while snorkelling in the coral sanctuary is nothing short of spectacular.

Local sea turtle hatcheries play a crucial role in conservation along this coast. Five of the world's seven species of sea turtles nest on Sri Lankan beaches. These hatcheries purchase eggs from locals — deterring the poaching trade — protect them in safe sandy enclosures until they hatch, and release the baby turtles into the ocean at night. Many facilities also rehabilitate injured adult turtles, ensuring the survival of these critically endangered species while educating visitors about marine conservation.

The town has a deep connection to the ocean, and the scars of the 2004 tsunami are still remembered at the nearby Peraliya Buddha statue memorial — a powerful reminder of nature's force and the community's resilience. Despite its history, Hikkaduwa pulses with energy, offering lively beach bars, fresh seafood, and a nightlife scene that keeps the southern coast vibrant long after sunset.
