Located on a peninsula at the absolute northernmost tip of the island, Jaffna offers a deeply fascinating cultural experience entirely distinct from the rest of Sri Lanka. Cut off from the south for decades during the civil war, the region has reopened to reveal a resilient community deeply rooted in Dravidian architecture, Tamil traditions, and Hindu spirituality.

The spiritual heart of Jaffna is the iconic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, a sprawling complex dedicated to Lord Murugan. During the annual Nallur Festival in August, the temple comes alive with weeks of elaborate rituals, processions, and devotional music that draw hundreds of thousands of worshippers. The vibrant gopuram (temple tower) adorned with hundreds of colourful deities is a masterpiece of South Indian temple architecture.

Jaffna's colonial and turbulent history is visible in the massive, star-shaped coral-stone walls of Jaffna Fort, originally built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch. The beautifully reconstructed Jaffna Public Library — once one of the largest in Asia before its tragic burning during the civil conflict — stands as a poignant symbol of the city's intellectual heritage and its determination to rebuild.

Exploring the northern islands is a must. A ferry ride to Delft Island reveals a rugged, coral-strewn landscape home to wild horses left behind by the Portuguese, while the island of Nainativu hosts both a major Hindu temple and a Buddhist shrine. Jaffna's culinary scene is a fiery revelation — the legendary Jaffna Crab Curry, Odiyal Kool, and the incredibly sweet local Karutha Colomban mangoes make this a food destination in its own right.
