The Ultimate 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary for 2026

Seven days might seem short for an island with so much to offer, but with a well-planned itinerary, you can experience the best of Sri Lanka's culture, nature, and beaches. Here is our recommended route for a one-week adventure.

Day 1: Arrival & Colombo City Tour

Touch down at Bandaranaike International Airport and head to Colombo. Spend your first day exploring the bustling capital. Visit the Gangaramaya Temple, stroll along Galle Face Green at sunset, and enjoy some incredible street food or a fine dining experience at one of the city's top restaurants.

Day 2: Sigiriya & The Cultural Triangle

Head north to the Cultural Triangle. The highlight here is undoubtedly Sigiriya (Lion Rock). Climb this ancient rock fortress early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. The frescoes and the view from the top are spectacular.

Day 3: Dambulla Caves & Kandy

En route to Kandy, stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring stunning statues and paintings. Once in Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and catch a traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening.

Day 4: The Scenic Train to Ella

Board the famous blue train from Kandy (or Nanu Oya) to Ella. This journey winds through misty mountains, lush tea estates, and cascading waterfalls. It's an experience you simply cannot miss. Spend the evening relaxing in the laid-back town of Ella.

Day 5: Hiking in Ella

Wake up early and hike up Little Adam's Peak for a stunning sunrise view. Afterwards, visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge and watch the train pass over it. In the afternoon, cool off at Ravana Falls or enjoy a tea factory tour.

Day 6: Safari in Yala National Park

Travel down to the south coast, stopping for an afternoon safari at Yala National Park. Famous for its high concentration of leopards, Yala is also home to elephants, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife. Spend the night at a nearby camp or hotel.

Day 7: Southern Beaches & Galle Fort

Conclude your trip by relaxing on the beautiful beaches of the south coast, such as Mirissa or Unawatuna. Before heading back to the airport, wander through the cobblestone streets of the historic Galle Fort, grabbing a coffee or a final souvenir.
